Dental Fillings

What are Dental Fillings?

A dental filling is a type of restoration that can be placed in a tooth that has a cavity. Fillings are tooth-colored and made out of a durable material known as composite resin. This material can last for many years and provide you with a beautifully restored tooth. The decay is first removed from the tooth before the filling is placed.

Why are Dental Fillings needed?

You might need a filling because you have a cavity. If you have one or more cavities, the decay is slowly infiltrating the tooth. It can get to the point where it goes completely down to the center of the tooth where the pulp, or nerve, is located. Before the decay is able to get this extreme, we can remove it and place a tooth-colored filling.

Who is a candidate for Dental Fillings?

Most patients who need a filling can easily have the procedure done in our office. Our goal is to provide you with a high-quality restoration that is going to improve your smile. These fillings can be placed in just about any tooth. Both adults and pediatric patients can benefit from having fillings placed.

What happens during the Dental Filling procedure?

To begin, we will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area. The decay is carefully removed from the tooth itself. The hole left behind is prepped for the new filling. Composite resin is then placed inside of this hole and any excess material is scraped away. The filling is hardened and cured with a bright light several times. You are then ready to leave the office with your brand new filling firmly in place. If you have an older filling that needs to be replaced or are looking to get rid of your amalgam metal fillings, we can remove these old restorations and place a new filling as needed.
