Dental Exams & Cleanings

What are Dental Exams & Cleanings?

A cleaning and exam can help to keep your teeth looking their best. Cleanings are done to remove plaque and tartar as well as deep stains from your teeth. This alone can help to prevent tooth decay and gingivitis. Exams are performed to help us look for problems before they can get worse.

Why are Dental Exams & Cleanings needed?

The reason a dental exam as well as a cleaning is needed is because they can help to keep your smile bright, full and healthy. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to forgo treatment of regular dental checkups. You may have been putting off a visit because of fear, anxiety or because you may think you need a lot of work done. The longer you go between appointments, the more buildup accumulates on your teeth and the more work you may need.

What happens during the procedure for Dental Exams & Cleanings?

The first step is to take x-rays so that we can use these during the appointment. Our hygienist will then clean the teeth using special instruments known as scalers. These help to scrape away tartar and stains from your teeth. The hygienist then measures your gum pockets to check for signs of either gingivitis or gum disease. The next step is for Dr. Molina to come in and perform the exam. The doctor is checking for cavities and other problems that will be essential for treatment.
