Dental Crowns

What are Dental Crowns?

A crown is a restoration that will be placed over a tooth that is damaged or that has been compromised in some way. Crowns are made with quality, natural-looking materials so that they blend with the rest of your smile. They can be placed over a tooth that has cracked, broken, has a large filling or one that has recently had a root canal. Most crowns can last for years and even a few decades before needing full replacement.

Why are Dental Crowns needed?

You might need a crown because one or more of your teeth has recently undergone a root canal, which leaves the tooth vulnerable. We may recommend this restoration because a tooth has cracked, broken or fractured enough to compromise the tooth. We may even advise you to have a tooth crowned because it has a large area of decay or a large filling in it. Crowns can help to protect the underlying tooth while restoring overall functionality.

Who is a candidate for a Dental Crown?

Dr. Sylvie Lam will examine your teeth to determine if you might benefit from a crown. If you need a crown, it is best to have the procedure done as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the tooth. Crowns can be placed on any tooth within the mouth. They are a great way to enhance your smile and your confidence.

What happens during the Dental Crown procedure?

The first step is to file down the damaged tooth. This makes more than enough room for the crown to be placed without it looking too bulky. Dr. Sylvie Lam then takes impressions of the tooth and surrounding area. These detailed molds are used to make the actual crown. You will then come into the office to have the permanent crown placed. We will adjust the bite and fit of the crown before you can leave the office with a brand new, full smile.
